SINOPSIS

Teacher’s expressive speech acts are essential in classroom discourse, reflecting the teacher’s emotions, attitudes, and evaluations in response to students’ behavior. Acts such as praise, greetings, gratitude, and complaints play a crucial role in establishing interpersonal connections and shaping classroom interaction, ultimately enhancing students’ emotional engagement and participation in EFL learning. This book aims to understand the types of expressive speech acts used by the teacher and what expressive speech acts contribute to boosting students’ engagement. It further explores the process through which these speech acts sustain student engagement in EFL classrooms, focusing on the dynamic relationship between teacher-student interaction.

This book adopts a qualitative case book approach to gain an in-depth understanding of the use of expressive speech acts by an English teacher and their role in student engagement in an EFL classroom. Next, this book highlights that expressive speech acts are essential strategies for fostering student engagement in EFL classrooms. Acts such as praise, greetings, and thanks create a positive learning environment, strengthening teacher-student relationships while boosting students’ confidence and participation. The results emphasize the importance of integrating expressive speech acts to promote more engaging, inclusive, and supportive classroom interactions.
